Flora of Milos
The flora and vegetation of Milos, a small but phytogeographically distinct island at the southwestern edge of the Kiklades, central Aegean area, are presented in this publication based on extensive field work. An abbreviated and annotated list of the flora is provided, with notes on ecological preferences, altitudinal distribution and frequency of occurence for the rarer taxa. One represative voucher or literature citation is included. Especially emphasized are 46 taxa wich are Greek endemics occuring on Milos of which two are local endemics restricted to the belonging to 1057 species, 454 genera and 112 families. In the introductory chapters geomorphological, climate and land use aspects are emphasized, the main vegetation types are discussed as well as the botanical history of the island and phytogeographical relationships. Greek endemics are noted as are recent introductions and alien taxa. Of special interest is the wetland flora which is surprisingly rich with its floristics composition altering every year depending on local rainfall and condensatation (dew), varying from luxeriant growth to desiccation and eventual loss of species.
