This volume of the Encyclopedia of the Swedish Flora and Fauna covers about 169 species. The two groups Sipuncula (peanut worms) and Nemertea (ribbon worms) are not particularly closely related. What they do have in common is that they include almost exclusively marine species, and that they are relatively unknown to most people. Apart from that, they are, in fact, very different indeed. While peanut worms are sedate, relatively inconspicuous, most ribbon worms are voracious predators capable of swallowing prey of their own size. Their bodies are covered in toxic mucus, and many of them are very brightly coloured.

This volume covers several groups of small moths, e.g. the predominately leafmining Lithocolletinae and the ermine moths (Yponomeutidae). The latter group includes the Bird-cherry Ermine, the larvae of which may wrap up entire trees in their whitish web. Some of these moths are strongly metallic or brightly coloured. Others are inconspicuous, blending perfectly with a lichen-covered tree trunk.

There are over 70 species of echinoderms along the Swedish coast - almost exclusively along the West Coast. Common starfish Asteriasrubens one can find on the beach, but most echinoderms live quite deep in the ocean and it required diving equipment in order to be able to study them in place. To this group belong except the starfish and sea urchins also liljestjärnor, snake stars with winding arms and elongated sea cucumbers that digs its way through the bottom sediments. It can be hard to see what they all have in common, but both similarities and differences, we will tell you about in the forthcoming volume of Nationalnyckeln.
