Gymnosperms of the United States and Canada
GYMNOSPERMS of the United States and Canada is unique in that it is not regional in nature, but offers a key for all the gymnosperms in both the United States and Canada. The key is supplemented with full color illustrations depicting leaves, cones, bark and mature plants in amazing detail. Dr. Elray S. Nixon is a recognized expert in plant ecology and taxonomy and Bruce Lyndon Cunningham is well known for his botanical prints and wood carvings. Bruce has degrees in both forestry and art. This first-of-its kind book features full color artwork of 115 species of gymnosperms. Most gymnosperms (naked seed) are shrubs or trees with naked seeds borne on the scales or on the branches. Many are conifers (cone-bearing) - an important commercial species. The volume is basically an identification key with a series of dichotomous choices leading to the scientific name of the gymnosperm. The key itself is richly illustrated with examples. Species distribution maps are placed throughout the book and a unique illustrated glossary is included. I am a forester, as well as a bibliophile. As a forester, I am used to scientific tomes, which have all the detailed data about trees, but don''t convey the beauty and awe of trees. In this work, Dr. Nixon includes an easy-to-follow dichotomous key and Bruce Lyndon Cunningham''s detailed artwork breath life into it. The illustrations remind me why I chose to work with trees. They are so colorful and detailed that I suspect some people are buying the book for the artwork alone. The book is useful to me for gymnosperms identification, but I enjoy just turning the pages and enjoying the pictures of tree components. It''s the next best thing to a walk in the woods.

Gnetales (Reprint 2010)
Henry Pearson (1870-1916) was an English botanist specialising in research on the Gnetophyta division of woody plants. In 1903 he was elected to the Henry Bolus Professorship of Botany at the South African College, Cape Town (now known as the University of Cape Town), and he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1916 shortly before his death. In 1915 Pearson was commissioned to write this volume for the Cambridge Botanical Handbooks series. Published posthumously in 1929, it was the first extensive study on the Gnetales order and the only such study in English published during the twentieth century. In it, Pearson investigates the morphology and reproduction of the three Gnetophyta genera and examines their relation to the angiosperms (flowering plants). His research on Gnetophyta was later used together with genetic studies to provide theories explaining the evolution of seed plants. Contents: Preface A. C. Seward, 1. Habit, distribution, ecology, taxonomy, 2. Vegetative morphology and anatomy, 3. The inflorescence and flower, 4. Reproduction, 5. Theoretical chapter, Bibliography, Index.

Proceedings of Cycad 2008. The 8th International conference on Cycad Biology
Cycads have been around since the Late Permian. During this time they have retained seemingly unchanged features, yet they have evolved unique characteristics that science continues to uncover. As the discoveries keep coming, medicine and agriculture find new applications for what cycads have to offer, lending to their status as an irreplaceable group within the world''s diverse plant kingdom. The International Conference on Cycad Biology, held every three years since its inception in 1987, is a prominent meeting centering on all aspects of the biology of this unusual, important, and interesting group of plants. The conference stimulates research in fields as diverse as horticulture and neurobiology, it also promotes ex-situ and in-situ conservation globally. Each conference has produced a volume of papers on the varied aspects of cycad biology. This volume, the eighth of its kind, is the most extensive to date. It represents the current state of knowledge about the evolution, pollination biology, ethnobotany, conservation status, and molecular biology of the living cycads. Some articles are in Spanish, every article has an abstract in English and Spanish. Having survived for 250 million years, cycads now find themselves endangered as a result of human activity. This volume addresses the issue from angles that include conservation biology, pest control, the role of insects and birds in cycad biology, and the role of cycads in various human cultural contexts.
